Wine Tour of Bulgaria

Wine growing in Bulgaria has always been popular. It has been oriented mostly to wine production which has evolved into brilliant red and white wine. There are a lot of well known wine celllars in Bulgaria in Melnik, Perushtitza, Assenovgrad, Liaskovets, Slaviantsi, Brezovo regions where you can taste delicious dry, semi-dry and sparkling red and white wines, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Mavroud, Gamza, Melnik, Misket, Muskat. Traminer, Dimiat and many others. Wine production is closely connected to the Bulgarian way of living. Every February a wine festival takes place all over the country when people celebrate Saint Trifon's Day. An old legend says that Saint Trifon protects and helps the wine growers and producers in Bulgaria. Bulgarian wines are exported to many European countries where they are welcomed by local wine fans.

THE WINES OF BULGARIA

Bulgaria is a famous producer of wine in Eastern Europe. The wines that succeed beyond all expectation are Cabernet, Chardonnay and Merlot. The Cabernet and Merlot have fruit, vigour, and balance - the robust qualities of red Bordeaux in a good vintage, if not its finesse.
The national varieties of red wine are Gamza, the lively Kadarka, Pamid, which gives pale gulping wine; Mavrud, which gives the opposite - the country's national pride;and Melnik, from that town in the far southwest.
Melnik could be called the Syrah of Bulgaria, strong, dark and very flavoury, ageing almost indefinitely. Among whites, the dominant local varieties are Rkatziteli and Dimiat. Red Misket and Muscat Ottonel are popular, but succes with Chardonnay, Reasling, Gewurztraminer and Aligote is elbowing most of the traditional varieties aside.
